katharina Somewhere near the town Görlitz in Sachsen, Germany there was a big manor house. The house and some land was owned by some nobel, whose name I don't know, but I know, that he had a high titel like Graf or Fürst. That house was totally destroyed after the Second Would War. I would like to find out more about it, expecially the name of the owners.
ipflo You probably mean Muskau, fortunately it is not totally de stroyed, it is now a shell and if i am right they are thinking about restoration.
It is one of the oldest 'wasserburgen' of the lausitz region. when it is built, is unknown. Since 1558 it belonged to the Schönaich family. In 1586 it burnt down and Wilhelm zu Dohna rebuilded it. Through marriage the castle comes to the Pückler family. Later owners are Hermann von Arnimm and prince Hendrik of the Netherlands.
The castle became famous of its parks, who were made by Hermann fürst/ prince von Pückler in 1811. In 1845 he sells the castle to the counts Hatzfeldt und Nostitz, because he is almost bankrupt, he moves to his ancestral castle of Branitz in Cottbus.
the castle lies in Germany, but most of the park lies in Poland, on the other side of the Neisse.

Jahmen (in germany), that once belonged to the counts of Hochberg and later to the princes of Putbus
Diehsa (in Germany), that once belonged to the counts of einsiedel
Halbau/ Ilova (in Poland) of the counts of Hochberg
Sagan/ Zagan (in Poland) built by order of Wallenstein, later it belonged to the Lobkowitz family, the duke of Kurland and his descendants (through his daughter)the princes of Talleyrand (who owned the castle until 1945). This castle burnt down and was a shell until the 1960's when the rebuilding started (on bildindex you can find some pictures)
katharina Thank you very much for the help,expecially because I am not very familier with the north regions of Germany. I have looked through the links and think, that Bad Muskau isn't probably the one I am looking for, because it wasn't destroyd during the war. (I am sure, that the one I am looking for was actually so damaged, that there sayed to be "no standing stone left"). The Sagan castle was owned by the French family, so it doesn't pass too.
Jahmen seems difficult to find on the Net. In or by which town it is situated, do you know?
ipflo Ah one of mine great interests is lost castles and houses.
I looked in my library and i found an other book on silesian castles (schlösser und herrensitze in schlesien from the wolfgang weidlich verlag). Jahmen is an 'suburb' of Klitten, once in Silesia and now in Sachsen (somewhat west of rothenburg). The book says that the princes of putbus sold the castle around 1873 and that most of the 20th century it belonged to a mining company, they undermined the castle so that they could mine 'braunkohlen'(~ brown coal, don't know the right english word) and because of that the castle was demolished in 1946.
Reading the book and your last post i don't think this is the castle you mean. maybe you could tell me more about how you heard about the castle you mean, maybe it gives me a clue where i should search this lost castle.
(Muskau is destroyed during the war, in the beginnings of 1945, but the shell is standing and maybe already restored, so it is obviously not the castle you mean)
ipflo maybe it is schloss Primkenau in Silesia, what now Poland is. It once belonged to the dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Augustenburg (the wife of the last german Emperor William II: Augusta Victoria belonged to this family) and it was destroyed in WW II.

An other possibility is Sonnewalde (in Brandenburg) that belonged to the counts of Solms-Sonnewalde, also destroyed in the war (1945)

but both these castle are near Görlitz in the sence of within 100 kilometres.
katharina Sorry, I have miksed it up. I have consulted my relatives and found out, that I have miksed the information about two different manor houses into one. The big manor by Görlitz could actually be Bad Muskau. The one that was totally destroyed was situated somewhere in Eastern Prussia, this castle was, after being destroyed in the war, razed to the ground by Russians. The lokation of the second house is unknown. Both they were properties of one family or related families. Since I don't have any additional information (like names, description of the houses etc.), I see, that it is too difficult to find exactly these manor houses, so I will leave this question for now. Thank you very much for your help.
ipflo maybe the castle in eastern prussia is schloss friedrichstein. it is the most famous castle in eatern prussia destroyed by the russians.
